Other Precious Metals

Other precious metals for jewelry

Silver

The first discoveries of silver date back to around 4000 BC. Back in Egypt. Silver was not only used to make jewelry, but also for valuable everyday items and as a means of payment. Silver, also called “moon metal,” has a strong mythical meaning because it is highly reflective. It used to be assumed that the moon was made of silver. It was also considered a special pure metal because silver has an antibacterial effect.

Copper-silver alloys are used in jewelry processing. The higher the silver content, the lower the risk of tarnishing. Sterling silver (also called 925 silver) is used to make exclusive jewelry. This alloy consists of 92.5% silver.

Yorxs does not offer the precious metal silver because the material reacts with the hydrogen sulfide present in the air, which is then converted into black silver sulfide and these are not ideal conditions to emphasize the fire of a diamond.

Furthermore, silver is only half as heavy as gold for the same volume and therefore hardly conveys the necessary value and quality that an engagement ring, for example, should have. Seen in this way, silver is the “lightweight” among the precious metals and is therefore, in our opinion, less suitable for important matters of the heart.

titanium

Titanium is a natural element with a silvery-gray color. In contrast to platinum, it is lighter and cheaper. Titanium is hypoallergenic and is therefore often used as a material for piercings.

The material is particularly robust, which makes subsequent processing of the material very difficult. For example, ring size adjustments can result in relatively high costs afterwards.

palladium

Palladium belongs to the group of platinum metals. It was discovered in 1803 and was named after the Greek goddess “Pallas” (Athene). Like platinum, palladium does not oxidize, so the color remains the same permanently. However, palladium is less rare, lighter and cheaper than platinum.

Jewelers are free to choose the composition of their palladium alloy. Yorxs does not offer palladium as a stand-alone precious metal. Palladium is a very light precious metal.

It has a similar density to silver and is therefore only half as heavy as gold, for example. As a result, palladium does not convey the value required for high-quality jewelry.

steel

Steel is a silvery white metal with a shiny surface. However, it is significantly less valuable than silver, white gold or platinum and is also darker in color.

Stainless steel is a very hard metal, which makes subsequent processing of steel jewelry problematic and very time-consuming. Ring size adjustments for stainless steel rings in particular are not recommended.

Stainless steel has been used in jewelry production for over a hundred years. However, due to the low price, it is mainly used in fashion jewelry production. Due to the diverse properties of stainless steel, the material is not only used to make jewelry, it is also used in kitchen appliances, computer parts or watches.
